The concept of manifestation has been around for centuries. It promises us the ability to turn our dreams into reality, find love, attract wealth, and live a life of purpose. The Law of Attraction philosophy has gained significant mainstream popularity through books like The Secret and Ask and It Is Given. In recent years, the concept has been embraced by psychologists and neuroscientists as well. At its core, the Law of Attraction suggests that we have the ability to influence our lives by focusing our thoughts and energy on what we want, rather than what we don’t want. So, is there any science behind this idea?

As it turns out, there is!

While the Law of Attraction might not work in a mystical or magical way, the brain’s ability to shape our perception of reality through beliefs, thought patterns, emotions, and energy is real. Let’s dive into the science behind how focusing on positive intentions can shape our experience.

While the Law of Attraction may seem esoteric, the brain science behind it reveals how powerful our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions can be in shaping our reality. Through processes like Neuroplasticity, the Reticular Activating System, the Mirror Neuron System, and the role emotions play in the brain’s reward center, the Law of Attraction is more than just a magical theory. It's actually a reflection of how our brains process information, create connections, and influence the world around us.

1. The Role of the Reticular Activating System (RAS)

The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a network of neurons in your brain that filters out unnecessary information and brings your attention to what is most relevant to you. Think of the RAS as the brain’s “information gatekeeper.” It helps determine what you consciously notice based on your beliefs, desires, and experiences. For example, if you’re in the market for a new car and you start looking at models online or talking to friends about it, your RAS filter will allow you to notice that particular model more frequently. It’s not that the cars weren’t there before; it's just that your RAS was simply prioritizing other stimuli, like the street signs, the people around you, or background noise. By focusing on something, you essentially “program” your RAS to notice it more often. The Law of Attraction suggests that when you set clear intentions and focus on what you want (whether it’s success, love, or health), your RAS shifts to bring those things into sharper focus, making it easier to spot opportunities and act on them. So, while it may seem like you are magically attracting what you want, it’s actually your brain’s focus on those desires that makes them more likely to manifest.

2. Positive Emotions and the Brain’s Reward System

Another area where the Law of Attraction aligns with brain science is in the role emotions play in shaping our actions and reactions. Positive emotions, such as gratitude, joy, and love, trigger the brain’s reward system, which includes areas like the dopamine pathway. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that’s often associated with motivation, pleasure, and reinforcement of positive behavior. When you focus on positive emotions and express gratitude for what you have, your brain releases more dopamine, which not only makes you feel good but also reinforces a mindset of abundance and possibility. This creates a feedback loop where you are more motivated to take actions that align with your desires, reinforcing the feeling that good things are happening in your life. On the flip side, negative emotions can trigger stress responses in the brain, leading to the release of cortisol, a hormone that can dampen your motivation and affect your overall well-being. By consciously choosing to focus on positive thoughts and emotions, you can shift your brain chemistry to support your goals, helping you navigate challenges with resilience and optimism.

3. The Power of Focus: What You Pay Attention To Grows

One of the central principles of the Law of Attraction is that what you focus on expands. If you constantly focus on positive outcomes, you are said to attract more positive events, while focusing on negativity brings more challenges. This isn't purely mystical; it can be explained through the concept of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. When you consistently focus on certain thoughts or experiences, your brain forms stronger connections related to those thoughts, making them more easily accessible and more likely to influence your actions. In other words, your attention shapes the pathways in your brain, and these pathways guide your behaviors, decisions, and ultimately your reality. For instance, if you repeatedly focus on being successful, your brain strengthens neural circuits related to confidence, problem-solving, and optimism. This makes you more likely to notice opportunities for success and take action toward achieving your goals. This is one reason why those who maintain a positive, goal-oriented mindset often appear to “attract” more success.

4. The Power of Beliefs: Rewiring the Subconscious Mind Through Neuroplasticity

The Law of Attraction also emphasizes the importance of your belief system. It suggests that when you truly believe you deserve to achieve your desires, you align yourself with the energy or vibration of those desires, which increases their manifestation in your life. From a brain science perspective, this relates to the way the subconscious mind operates. The subconscious mind is responsible for holding beliefs, memories, and habits that influence our behaviors. Many of these beliefs are formed early in life and continue to operate beneath our conscious awareness. If you believe, deep down, that you are unworthy of success, this belief will affect your choices and actions, often leading to self-sabotage or missed opportunities. However, through practices like affirmations, visualization, and meditation, it’s possible to reprogram the subconscious mind. When you consistently affirm positive beliefs about yourself and your future, your brain starts to adjust its neural pathways, shifting your behavior toward the creation of those new beliefs. As a result, you are more likely to make choices that align with your desires, further contributing to the manifestation of your goals.

5. The Brain’s Mirror Neuron System: Empathy and Connection

The Law of Attraction also suggests that like attracts like, meaning that the energy you put out into the world attracts similar energy back. Scientifically, this can be explained through the mirror neuron system, a network of brain cells that allow us to empathize with others by mimicking their emotions and actions. When you radiate positivity, compassion, and kindness, your brain activates mirror neurons that help you connect with others who are also emanating similar energy. This creates an environment of mutual support, cooperation, and trust, all of which are conducive to achieving personal goals and building meaningful relationships. By focusing on the good in others and fostering a sense of connection, you may unknowingly attract the same kind of positive interactions into your own life.

6. How the Central Nervous System Impacts Manifestation

There are only two states of being and we are always in one or the other. You are either in the Sympathetic Nervous System state or the Parasympathetic Nervous System state.

  1. Sympathetic Nervous System – Fight, Flight or Freeze – This is our primal survival instinct, evidenced by negative emotions such as stress, fear, sadness, anxiety, jealousy, boredom, exhaustion

  2. Parasympathetic Nervous System – Rest and Digest – This is where we have the power to thrive, evidenced by positive emotions such as joy, peace, motivation, clarity, focus, enthusiasm

Positive change only takes place in the Parasympathetic state of being. Period. This state is where you have access to creativity, healing, and innovation. There are several ways to activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System, including Meditation, Breathwork, and Yoga to name a few. Even a few minutes a day of one or more of these practices will increase your manifestation success exponentially.

Conclusion:

By harnessing the power of focused thought, positive emotion, and beliefs, you can align your brain’s natural processes with the life you want to create. So the next time you find yourself visualizing your goals, remember: you’re not just dreaming. You’re rewiring your brain to bring your desires into reality.
